General Aftercare

Important

  • Do NOT touch the area at all
  • Do NOT turn or twist jewellery
  • Take care not to catch or snag

Cleaning

  • Spray twice daily with sterile saline mist
  • Do NOT use any other cleaning products
  • Do NOT pick or directly remove crusties (they’re friends & there for a reason!)

Changing Jewellery

  • Let us do your first change over and be shown how to remove and insert jewellery
  • Costume jewellery (butterfly backs, etc) may be worn short-term after 12+ months
  • Wait 12+ months before removing or changing jewellery (even for a short time)
  • Don’t take out for extended periods, or at night, for first 3+ years to avoid shrinking
  • Plated metals, gold under 14kt, silver & plastics cause irritation and should be avoided

Chemicals

  • If it hurts your eyes, its bad for piercings
  • Avoid antibacterials, antiseptics and other cleaning agents meant for unbroken skin
  • Moisturisers & ointments cause irritation

Healing Periods

Week 1 – Inflammatory Period

  • Swelling, redness, localised bruising & mild bleeding are normal.
  • Indirectly cool area.

Week 2+ – Initial Healing

  • Yellow ‘crusties’ form as new skin cells are generated.
  • No picking, touching, or Q-tips.

Week 3-4 – Checkup time

  • Show us your piercing, so we can see how you are healing.

Week 4-12 – Downsize time

  • When instructed, please come in to see us to fit a shorter bar.

2-3 Months – Healing and settling

  • Continue not to touch the piercing.
  • Continue cleaning if it is still crusty.

3-6 Months – Maturation

  • Skin inside your piercing will be forming.

12+ Months – Normalised

  • Fully healed with a perminent channel.
  • Care should still be taken to not irritate.

Facial Piercings Ear, nose, etc

Bath & Shower

  • Warm rinse front and back in the shower
  • Avoid contact with shampoo, soaps, etc.
  • Dry piercings using a hand-fan before bed

Sleeping

  • Sleeping on a healing piercing will cause irritation
  • Hair clips, pillows or tucking-in may help

Sports & Activities

  • Should not be covered during the first 3 months
  • Should not be removed during the first 12 months
  • Ocean water should be avoided during the first 3+ weeks
  • Chlorine should be avoided during the first 3+ months

Oral PiercingsTongue, lip

  • Ensure any mouthwash is alcohol-free and only use as you normally would
  • Avoid tooth whitening products
  • Elevate swollen areas when sleeping
  • Eat soft/blended food until downsized
  • Do NOT play with your piercing (seriously)
  • Drink water after eating or drinking
  • Expect an extended swelling period
  • Ensure you come in to downsize!

Torso PiercingsNavel, Nipple, etc

  • Breast piercings should have fresh nursing pads for the first 2 months
  • Wear non-compressive underclothing
  • Be sure to avoid rubbing on clothing
  • No bodily fluids on healing wounds

Genital PiercingsPenile & Vulva

  • Bleeding is normal for the first week
  • Practice safe sex during healing (inc. oral)
  • Sex can resume when comfortable
  • Ensure physical activities don’t irritate
  • Wear supportive underwear while healing
  • Shower before/after sex during healing

Surface PiercingsDermal anchors, surface bar

  • Do NOT cover, catch, or lay on area
  • Indirectly cool area 10 mins on/off
  • Hirudoid around the area if bruised
  • Allow us to change your jewellery
